Westlake Player's Recreate Chicago The Musical

At the end of March, Westlake High School will be putting on a production of Chicago The Musical: High School Edition. The play consists of kids from all grades coming together to take part in this 1920's musical. The director is the school's Chorus Teacher, Mrs. Melito, and the choreographer is town member, Gina Horan.

There are bad people in this world, but it does not mean that they don't deserve to be happy, everyone does. The world is full of bad people with beautiful hearts; beneath their actions and reputation is someone who is good. 

Overprotective Parents

We all want more time, but we do not appreciate the time that we have. We never stop to take a moment to appreciate what we already have. Instead, we just ask for more.

The answers to this question vary, as each individual person will experience different results when listening to music, but multiple sources and studies find the overall effects of music to be beneficial to teens. 

Westlake High School Art Teachers, Also Teaching Middle School

The 2018-2019 school year at Westlake High School brought a change for the high school art teachers; this year, different from prior years, high school teachers were given the assignment of teaching a middle school class . Although this is a new situation for all involved, they are excited to teach a middle school students.

On January 31 and February 1, 2, and 3, Aladdin premiered in the John S. Whearty Theater. The show, similar to the Disney movie, is centered around a poor street dweller named Aladdin who finds a genie and turns his life around and meets a princess named Jasmine.

However, they couldn’t be more wrong. According to Marge Perry, PB & J contains fiber and protein that help the body run to the best of its ability. Surprisingly, peanut butter on whole wheat bread supplies people with an amazing amount of protein and other nutrients that help the body maintain peak performance levels.

Westlake's Chalk Art

The annual Chalk Art Competition at Westlake is a fun after school competition where kids compete to win candy and even some money based on the artistic displays. Students have to decorate a 5-by-5 square using chalk as the medium. Each year there is a different theme to create within two hours, and this year, the focus was “Into the Wild.”

Star Athlete Becomes Star of the Stage

Joe Ferri, known at Westlake High School as a football, basketball, and lacrosse star, is now the starring role in the 2016 Spring Musical.

Headphones In, Art Mode On

Once her headphones are in, Catie Lyons is in her own world, creating art that inspires the people in her life. Lyons admires anime art and pursues this admiration by illustrating her own characters, as well as drawing characters from her favorite movies and T.V. shows.

From Under the Sea to The Metros

Westlake High School made history yet again, selling out all five shows. Their spring musical, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, drew in a whole new crowd, kids. It also drew the attention of The Helen Hayes Metropolitan Theater Awards, or Metros for short. The Metro judges came to four out of five performances and nominated two of our castmates for awards: Senior, Olivia Schettino and Sophomore, Dean Kapica.

Final Bow

The Westlake Players have had a huge impact on the Class of 2017. Most of the members have participated in theater throughout their high school careers, and now, these careers are coming to an end. The final production for these committed seniors was Disney’s Little Mermaid.

 

 

Blending through Disney World

From April 21-24, Westlake High School’s singing group, The Blendors, took a trip to Disney World for the Festival Disney singing competition.

Toppling the Block

For the past three years, Westlake High School  has been run on a block schedule. This means that classes run for 80 minutes rather than 40, and they are every other day. For example, on “A” days first block, I would have Government and Economics; while on “B” days first block, I would have Media/Video 2.

Ten Day Film Challenge

Westlake High School Media/Video and Video Club students signed up to be part of this Multi State Contest, the 10 Day Film Challenge. In 2011, it began with three NJ high schools.   In 2017, “it has grown to 145 high schools and impacting 4,500 student filmmakers from 25 states.”
