Behind the Scenes of Westlake Football

By ALYSSA FINICK

The 2018 Junior Varsity Westlake Football team is like a family; they all started playing because they loved the sport.  There are many benefits of being on the team.

“Being on the football team feels good and it makes me feel important,” Hamad Azhar, sophomore at Westlake High School states. As part of being on the JV football team it makes the players believe that they have a place at the school.

Although Jonpeter Fiorenza, a sophomore on the JV football team says that being on the team is “ fun, it is also hard having practice everyday and in the summer.” All the students should know that anything fun also has its hardships.

“My favorite part about being on the football team is connecting with everyone on the team,” Azhar states. Being on the football team creates another family for all the players and coaches since they are together all the time. Not only do they have a good relationship with their teammates they also have to have a good relationship with the cheerleaders.

“Game day is hype with everyone because after a week of hard work we get to play a game,” Fiorenza says. Being so close with your team is a good thing because it makes everything more fun.

Westlake Football is a big deal so living up to that legacy is amazing. “ it gives you a reason to fight and work hard and play for the school and past students,”Azhar says.

“It's a lot of pressure and I want to be like the team [the 2015 team who won Sectionals] and be as good as them,” Fiorenza states. It is a lot of pressure because Varsity is well known in this town and football is the sport to watch because it is very entertaining to watch and it is very exciting.

“When I do not have practice I am with my family and friends,” Azhar says. This is important because they spend so much time practicing and rarely have time to be with their family and friends so when they do not have practice that is what they are doing.

The coaches play a big part in the players lives so it is important that they are likable and act like family. “They are friendly and easy to talk to they are more friends than coaches,” Fiorenza says.

“They support me and show me that they care,” Azhar states. It is important that the coaches are nice and make the players feel wanted because if they do not feel needed they will just stop playing football.

Playing football is very important to theses players so to have such a good and supportive environment really helps them.
