What is the Meaning of Life?

By SIENA EDWARDS

Philosophers have devoted their lives to figure out life's unanswerable questions. They have tried to figure out why people are here or what our purpose is. However, there is one question that people ponder quite often: what is the meaning of life? I myself have contemplated this question and  I have looked at it from quite a few different angles. I have tried looking at it through different perspectives. I have come to a conclusion about what I think the meaning of life is. The meaning of life is simply to live it.

While that may sound odd, that life is simply meant to be lived, this is what I feel is the meaning of life. Some people feel that the meaning of life is to find their soulmate, or their purpose, or their passion, but that is not what life is all about (although it may be discovered along the way). Life is meant to be lived and lived to the fullest. Everyone is given one life and they have one chance to do what they want. Each day we are given a choice: to live the day or just let it go by without any meaning. When life is lived, people can discover quite a bit about themselves and the world around them. Life is not meant to solely be about looking for your soulmate or traveling the world, it is about living it.

Simply living life can be interpreted in quite a few ways. To some, it might mean just breathing and existing. To others, it might mean exploring the world and climbing to the top of Mount Everest to find their chakra, but this is not what I mean. What I mean when I say that the meaning of life is to live it, I’m saying that we cannot let each precious day go to waste. Each moment that we are alive in this incredibly beautiful place called Earth is special. Each moment in the incredible life that we are given is special.

Not every moment is going to be perfect, but we have to keep going. While that is often easier said than done, when people are stuck in the past because of a daunting memory, they are not truly living their life and they are completely ignoring the meaning of it. Why else would we be given one shot to do incredible things if we are not going to take advantage of that opportunity?

However, I also see another side to this question, as it will always remain rhetorical. Everyone has a different perspective on life and it is impossible to come to one absolute meaning.

Another meaning of life is that there is no absolute meaning. We are all different and we can never agree to disagree. People never see things in the same light, especially when it comes to the meaning of something, especially life. Because of this, there is no absolute meaning to life. There is no way to correctly describe life. Out of all the billions and billions of words in all the languages in the world, there are not enough words to come to a single conclusion about the true meaning of life.

Life in itself is all about the journey, and everyone is different, which furthers my point. There is no one true journey or meaning that can sum up life as a whole. Meaning is simply something that is given to something else to show further value and purpose, but life does not need this because it is already valuable enough.

In the grand scheme of things, we are all just waiting for our end. Some people struggle and suffer through their lives wishing for a knock from death’s door. Others thrive and live their life to the fullest.
