GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

The Government Shutdown

With a recent government shutdown coming to an end, and another in the shadows, many wonder why it occurs and what the effects are.

The government was shut down because Democrats and Republicans do not all agree on funding the wall that President Trump wants to build at our border. President Trump is asking for for his  5.7 billion dollars to be placed toward its’ construction.

Republicans and Democrats opposed the shutdown and President Trump agreed to reopen the government until February 15th for negotiations to take place.

Although the government did open, Trump did say that he would declare a State of Emergency if the bill regarding funding the wall was not approved by Congress.

What is a Government Shutdown?

A government shutdown occurs when the president refuses to sign or Congress refuses to pass a certain bill or law.

What happens during a Government Shutdown?

During a Government shutdown there is no funding to federal agencies. This creates a period of time where people who work for the government are put on leave, resulting in loss of pay.

What’s Next?

With February 15th nearing, citizens are still waiting for the final say on border security and funding for the wall.
