Westlake Through the Eyes of a Freshman

By ABBEY MARTIN

The 2018 freshman class at Westlake High School left their middle schools and enrolled into high school they shared their experiences and opinions about their freshman year so far.

Jeffrey Gonyo, a Westlake High School freshman and new student, notes that his favorite part of school is “study hall." Having study hall allows students to work on homework if they do not believe they will have time later to do it, but it also takes some of the stress of having back to back classes all day.

“The high school is way more relaxed and you get a lot more freedom.”, Lauren Sargent a freshman at WHS states. Westlake High School allows kids to have their phones on them during class and also allows them to use them during passing time and any free periods.

“I am going to be starting wrestling in November, and I am looking to do track in the spring and signed up for yearbook and chess club,” Gonyo states. Westlake High School opens up students to many clubs and sports teams so they can find exactly what they like.

“I plan on joining some but Im apart of the soccer team and plan on trying out for lacrosse,” Sargent states. Sports and clubs run on a schedule so kids are able to join the clubs of their choice while playing sports and not have them always overlap.

Gonyo notes that the major difference between WHS and his previous school is the “size comparison." He continues to say “Westlake is a lot smaller but I still like it.”

Westlake High School is small compared to others, which allows students to know everyone.

Sargent notes her opinion of her previous school Westlake Middle School: “I enjoyed it, it was stressful.” She continues to talk about her opinions of WHS: “the high school is more relaxed and you get a lot more freedom.”

The high school treats kids like adults and allows them to have more freedom when it comes to things like cell phone use and leaving campus.

Coming to Westlake High School has given both students more freedom and has allowed them find clubs and sports teams that they really enjoy.
