Details About New York City's Halloween Terror Attack

By EMILY RUBINO

On October 31, 2017, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov drove into a crowd of pedestrians and bicyclists in New York City after planning the attack for several weeks.

The 29 year old suspect lived in New Jersey with his wife and three children, working as an Uber driver, however officials say that “the attacker appears to have radicalized himself online,”and conducted the attack after being inspired by ISIS, Mark Berman and Matt Zapotosky of the Washington Post report.

Saipov stated that he “began planning an attack a year ago and decided to use a truck two months ago,” Alex Johnson  and Tom Winter of NBC News state. A week before Tuesday night, he rented a truck, practicing with it for Halloween night “because he believed more people would be outside as potential targets,” according to Berman and Zapotosky.

After the truck attack, Saipov crashed into a school bus and waved around fake guns before an NYPD officer took down the attacker by shooting him in the stomach. Griffiths of CNN report that “Saipov was questioned by investigators” and has “been linked to social media accounts that contain ISIS-related material.”

Law enforcement has revealed that eight people were killed and eleven were injured, as more details about the attacker come to light, such as his original plan to continue “onto the Brooklyn Bridge and kill more pedestrians,” Johnson of NBC added.

Saipov also had a bag of knives in the rental truck intended for use, but crashed before accessing them.

He is said to have waived “his right to avoid self-incrimination while in custody” as he was charged Wednesday with “one count of providing material support and resources to ISIS and another count of violence and destruction of motor vehicles,” BBC News reports.

Tuesday’s incident is the deadliest terror attack in New York City since September 11, 2001.
