Amazon’s Uprising During the Pandemic

By JILLIAN RAGUSO

Amazon’s sales are skyrocketing due to the global pandemic COVID-19. Amazon has recently become the most successful business; the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has become one of the top three richest people on earth as well.

Thanks to the pandemic, Bezos and Amazon have seen a drastic rise in sales and success of the world's biggest business.

Although Amazon has become a worldwide sensation over the past 10 years, COVID-19’s influence on Amazon sales and humans’ reliance have been even more exponential.

Before the pandemic, the company was not close to how successful it is in the present time. Although they was always one of the top companies, it quickly became the top one during the COVID-19 Pandemic. According to Edward Hellmore of The Guardian, prior to COVID, Amazon brought in 2.9 million dollars in 2019-2020; after the initial start of the pandemic, it brought in 5.2 million dollars.

Emma Dougherty, a loyal Amazon user, constantly refers back to the fact that the convenience of online shopping and “the ability to search and find things on the website takes little to no effort or time.”

With knowing that COVID-19 has many in-store restrictions, the idea of online shopping for many people is extremely useful and convenient, especially in a time with circumstances like staying at home.

Not only has Dougherty realized the convenience of Amazon.com during the pandemic, but another loyal customer of Amazon, Donna Raguso, recognized that her purchases on the websites “have nearly doubled during the course of the pandemic.”

Many other Amazon users and new customers have done the same thing as Raguso. According to Edward Helmore, journalist for The Guardian, ever since the pandemic began “the company [Amazon] tripled its profits amid a 37% increase in earnings.”

It is clear that in just this past year alone, the pandemic had a massive influence on the increase in profit for the company as a whole.

Helmore reports that during the heart of the pandemic, it was announced by Brian Olsavsly, the CFO of Amazon that  “In total, we have incurred more than $7.5billion in incremental COVID-19 related costs in the first three quarters.”

It is easy to infer that more of that same kind of money will begin to roll in for the fourth quarter as well, with the continuation of COVID-19 and people’s strong reliance on technology.
