2025 California Wildfires
By Giana Rotondi
As of the 14th of January, there are 3 wildfires currently ripping through Los Angeles County, California. The Palisades fire, the most devastating of the 3, began on the 7th of this month near a hiking trail. Spreading over 23,000 acres, this blaze has been stirred on immensely by the high amount of wind sweeping across the county, carrying embers and planning to cause from $135B to $150B in damages by the time they are fully contained.
The Eaton fire, which also began on the 7th of January is currently at 35% containment, while the Palisades fire is at 18% containment and the Hurst fire, the smallest of the three, is thankfully sitting at 97% contained.
As of the week of the 20th, unfortunately another large fire has begun around the Santa Clarita area in California, called the Hughes fire. This fire seemingly replaced the Hurst fire, which has now been completely contained, as Hughes has now spread across 10,000 acres, but is luckily at 14% containment.
Lastly, an update on the fire that started this all, or the Palisades Fire, is currently sitting at 72% contained, while the Eaton fires containment has doubled to over 70% contained. At this point, at least 15,000 structures have been destroyed, the death toll is expected to reach 30 people, and the cost of damages is growing each second.
