Have You Been Carving Pumpkins the Wrong Way?

By Adriana Escobedo

Whether you want to give your pumpkin a smile, a silly face, or a scary look, you would most likely start by cutting the top, placing a candle inside, and putting the lid back on. However, this traditional method is being questioned after a shocking Tik Tok video made by the user @brunchwithbabs.

With over 2.6 million followers on Tik Tok, Babs is a grandmother who enjoys sharing traditional family recipes and helpful hacks. Babs’ recent video showcasing Do’s and Don’ts of pumpkin carving surprised the audience with her unique techniques. The comment section exploded when Babs cut her pumpkin open from the bottom instead of the top. By cutting the pumpkin from the bottom, you can easily put it over your lit candle, eliminating the struggle of placing your candle inside and getting burnt in the process. Her viewers were mind-blown and thankful for this “genius” idea.

Don’t leave yet! There are still more hacks to be shared!

Babs continues to impress us as she uses a hand mixer to deal with the strings and seeds inside of the pumpkin. She claims that the mixer “did the hard work of loosening all those strings.” So now, you can easily scoop up your seeds without a problem! Babs also recommends using cookie cutters and a mallet to carve your pumpkin designs if you don’t want to struggle using a knife.

To make your pumpkin last longer, Babs uses Vaseline on all of the open surfaces. Her video caption reads that, “[p]umpkins should last 1-2 weeks carved.” Last but not least, our innovative teacher gives us the choice of having a “beautifully scented Jack O’Lantern” by sprinkling cinnamon inside of the pumpkin and putting it over your candle.

Ta-da! All done! Hopefully Babs’ techniques inspired us to try new ways of carving our pumpkins this year! We will certainly be waiting for more of her hacks and ideas!
