Homecoming Preparations at Westlake

By Brooke Pfeiffer

As Vice President, I can speak to the endless time and energy needed to make the week as special as possible for students and the community.

Considering that this year’s Homecoming was later than previous years’, all members of Student Council and other student volunteers gathered together to tie ribbons around the perimeter of the football/soccer field. We did this before student athletes’ games to show school pride and our school colors. This is a very long and tedious task, but it is all worth it in the end because it looks phenomenal and spirited. It also recognizes all Varsity athletes who play in the Fall season sports.

First off and most exciting for students is Spirit Week. Throughout the week, the days’ themes are the key component. Everyone appreciates having this, as it is a great way to show off school spirit and fashion sense. This year's themes were as follows:  Monday - Pajama Day; Tuesday - USA Day; Wednesday - Wear Pink Day; Thursday - Class Pick; and Friday - Class Color. For Thursday and Friday, Sophomores chose Jersey vs. Jersey Shore and the color white.

According to Class President Lindsay Fox, her favorite day is “class color day because we get to spend time decorating class quote shirts, taking pictures, and celebrating Pep Rally at the end of the day.”

Another aspect required for this week to be memorable is Hallway Decorating..Each grade has a corridor to decorate on the main level and competes with the other three classes to determine which hall is the best looking. These themes are typically associated with the theme of “class pick.”

Before the Homecoming football game, all members of the Student Council from the Class of 2026 gather to brainstorm food options that they anticipate would be popular at the game. Members even go to the elder student council representatives to see what their vision is and to make sure they aren't selling it. This is much more difficult than it appears since all of the upperclassmen grab the sweet treat and basics that sell quickly; any underclassmen have to really think hard to come up with things that will sell during Homecoming in hopes to raise money for our class.

Even though all members of student council take a great deal of time and effort in planning, every day is worth it.
