Remembering the Joys of Halloween

By Danielle Michilli

Do students still enjoy  Halloween? When children were little, waking up in the morning on Halloween made them ecstatic. They were able to dress in anything they desired to be. Whether their dream was to be a singer, a superhero, or even a princess, they were able to play the part on that special day. They would walk into school feeling free to express themselves.

As a child, there were numerous activities for the young students. There was a Halloween parade to walk in where each student could show off their costume to other kids who had been outside of their assigned class. As a child, I walked through with a smile from ear to ear exhilarated to not only show my costume to others, but to be able to see others, and what they had decided to be.

However, in high school, it all changes. On Halloween in high school, as you walk the halls, you may glance over one or two students dressed up, but you really cannot even tell it is Halloween.

When did students stop wanting to dress up?

Why was it such a fun activity when we were kids?

When was the time we all grew out of it?

Even if students in high school still dress up, some view it as thrilling, but others seem to ridicule them.

When did we all begin to “grow up” and disregard the fun activities we all loved when we were young? This is more than just not dressing up on Halloween. Why do we act as if we are too mature to participate in the fun things?

As we get ready to go to college, get our license, and get our first job, we lose sight of our inner person as a child. When we do this, it seems to over complicate life.

Never losing touch with your younger self allows growth, simplicity, and more importantly, enjoyment in life. Because, as a child, everything made more sense. There were not as many obligations that made life stressful. We were learning as we went on and grew up. Now that we have grown up, we should continue to learn and experience things but remember the simple of joys of childhood and try to bring them back.
