Westlake's Volunteer First Responders
By Elizabeth McClusky
Volunteer student First Responders are learning with professionals about how to take care of their community and others for life-saving moments and how to act fast and efficiently. Many believe that being part of this can be daunting, stressful, and demanding; while it can be at times, it is also one of the most rewarding experiences. From meeting new people to creating relationships, the experience is sure to make every volunteer stronger, smarter, and a quick study.
Along with this, Junior Corps members who attend the calls are also responsible for helping take the stretcher or other equipment in and out of the truck and being a second pair of eyes, ears, and hands for the EMTs and paramedics; Junior Corps members help to distract patients, calm them down, and make them feel safe in a time of uncertainty. In addition, Valhalla Volunteer Ambulance Corps members are stand-bys for sporting events, such as Westlake Homecoming, and a crew even went to Maria Ferri Children's Hospital for the holiday season with other first responders from all over the county to bring holiday cheer to the children!
A few of Westlake's amazing staff members are right by their sides trying to help make a difference. Guidance counselor, Mr. Dipaolo; athletic trainer, Hillary Piccoli; and math teacher, Mr. McClintock, are all a part of Valhalla Ambulance Corp.
