Benefits of Travel

By Ellie Georgioudakis

Most people see traveling as seeing beautiful sights, but it's not just all about the physical beauty, as there is so much more to traveling. As a person who has been traveling since a very early age, I have learned so much about the different cultures and ways people live from experiencing different countries.

Exposure to new cultures gives any traveler insight into:

  • Art & Style

  • Language

  • Food

  • Ways people live

  • Style of communication

  • Day to day activity

  • Work/Life Balance

It is good to know about countries around the world and the way they live, as everyone should get the chance to travel and learn about different places because it really helps educationally and mentally. Exposure to various ways of life allows for an open mind, a fundamental of growth.

Based on the country, the art and style changes based on the influence of the culture surrounding artists and designers. As a matter of fact, various regions of each country may even shift in style. For instance, in Italy, travelers will be exposed to art and architecture that ranges from Gothic and Renaissance to New European style. Regardless, exposure to the various styles of Classical, Byzantine, Medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Modern, Postmodern and New European through art, literature, and architecture builds a more well-rounded individual.

Similarly, listening to various forms of language helps the mind. The language in different countries obviously  differs from the American accent and American English. It is very interesting to see how other people around the world speak, and it is even more interesting to know that the English language is built from many other languages.

All around the world, people communicate differently. Some communicate more properly, while others have a more casual tone and dialect. . In America, we tend to speak with more slang unlike some countries who keep a more formal approach. Also, people with different cultural backgrounds communicate using different styles. Their language, words, gestures, and phrases may even differ in their application.

The food in different countries is fresher than the food in America. But, when trying the food in different countries, I come to find that sometimes the food they produce in America is actually better.  Here in America, different recipes and styles of cooking developed due to environmental and cultural factors which serve to make a delicious meal!

In different countries such as in Europe, their day starts much later. Their more relaxed approach to starting their work/school day later differs greatly from the American “get-up-and-go” between 6:00-8:00 AM. Many cultures even take a midday pause to go home to lunch and even sneak in a nap. Also, people stay out very late in different countries, until about 2 AM; even if they are just in the streets, they are always up very late to socialize.

The work in different countries is not as hard as the work we do here. In America we work very hard and that is why it is so much more expensive to live here. In different countries, it is much cheaper to live and there are not as many opportunities, limiting the amount of work available.

Regardless of where one travels, there is always something to learn. Of course, it is important to see different places to appreciate the beauty of other countries, but what is even more important is the takeaway from culture.
