Westlake's Art Show
By Kristina Mardjonovic
Annually, the Westlake Art Department works tirelessly to showcase the creativity and genius of student artists. Student work from K through 12 is selected by teachers and featured on display in the Westlake Library.
In order to start off the Spring season, the Art Show highlights all different forms of art: photography; drawing & painting; fashion; film; ceramic; picture collages; contact sheets; and storyboards.
The art teachers carefully pick and curate students' art work, making display boards and tables in order to bring life to the library and well-deserved attention to the artists. When selecting work, it is meant to highlight the various ways art is able to reach vast audiences.
Art work ranging from ceramic food dishes to real life fashion drawings are displayed. Different textures like fur, paper mache and layered paper work are available for viewers to feast their eyes on. Students were able to tell a story through their artwork.
Regardless of the the media, either a Broadcast groups’ short video or through a painting, all art is meant to display a deeper story, a theme that applies to life to be examined. Viewers are able to walk through the library and see the different levels of creativity and execution due to the different age ranges.
Elementary students focused on portraits, line work and classic art techniques, whereas middle and high schoolers had an array of different pieces. The art work that stood out to me the most was the ceramics pieces, showing a different style of art. Showing how a blob of clay can be turned into a 3 dimensional, practical piece.
Regardless of grade or development, each piece of art is meant to encourage viewers to appreciate, reflect and take away a new perspective.
