The AP Experience
By Maeve Walsh
AP classes are often seen as something challenging and time consuming, and while that is true I believe the benefits are far more valuable. Many schools offer a wide variety of AP classes; Westlake offers a total of 22 AP classes, ranging widely from the core class to the arts and computer sciences. AP classes help build an individual's character, hopefully shaping them into a successful young adult.
They are extremely time consuming, and the amount of effort you need to succeed in one of these classes is demanding. However, the grade you receive accurately assesses the amount of time and effort given in the class. Students who work hard and spend time completing the assignments and studying will receive higher marks, while students who barely put in the time and effort will get lower marks. Time and effort mean a great deal in learning.
After some research, Mrs. Speisman found that, for every hour spent in the classroom per week, you need to spend the same amount of time on your own.
AP classes also help a student develop time management skills. Balancing school work, athletics, a social life, and potentially a job helps students realize that managing time is imperative. School work does not only consist of AP classes, as students enrolled in these are often managing honors classes, electives, and regular classes.
According to junior Isabel, who has participated in 5 AP classes: “I think time management is very important for AP students. I know that I can’t study hours on end for a single class, so I need to pick the topics I struggle with and study these the most. It helps me see my strengths and weaknesses.”
Lastly, AP classes help prepare students for college. The material covered, complexity of assignments and pacing, give a sense of the responsibilities endured during a college career. The lecture style, amount of notes, and level of difficulty of the tests are a good stimulation of the college experience, helping you succeed in the near future.
Senior Shaina Piccucci who took AP Lang and AP Environmental said, “It is a useful insight on how college level classes work and function.”
