Should AI Be Adopted in the Classroom?

By Zoe Gallarello

With the rising impact of AI around the world, one major question frequently brought up is, should AI be used in school environments? Seen from recent developments, Generative AI is here to stay, and its impact on the field of education will only grow as artificial intelligence continues to develop, so the best thing that schools can do is teach students how to use AI in the right, beneficial way towards their education.

The answer to this question is both confusing and complicated because there are both pros and cons of using AI in classrooms.

While the specter of students using AI to cheat has raised concerns among educators around the world, the potential positive and productive uses of AI counterbalance those fears. Some positives of using AI in classrooms are it inspires creativity, summarizes existing materials, and so on, according to “AI in Schools.” The author continues, but most importantly, AI helps personalize learning, create more inclusive lesson plans, give immediate feedback to work, and provide great access to resources. These are all positive impacts that help give students a more advanced way of learning.

But even though the positive impacts may outweigh the negative ones, schools still disapprove of AI because there has been evidence of cheating and just coping work from AI to get it done faster. Lauren Boulanger, a high school English teacher in rural Massachusetts, believes that using AI for assignments is a way for students to avoid doing work and it gives them easy access to just coping something down quickly for a good enough grade.

Seen from above, with all the advantages that AI can offer to teachers, students, and administrators, it does come with its challenges and drawbacks like possible cheating and students not completing their work on their own. This is a main concern that prevents schools from totally allowing AI in classrooms.

Education is about the process of learning, and with the influence of AI students may not be able to reach their full potential because of their heavy reliance on AI.

The question of whether AI should be adopted in classrooms is ambiguous to most schools because there are various pros and cons for each side of the debate.

The best thing that education systems can do is approach usage of AI cautionally in the classrooms, but also allow some sort of creative freedom while using the tool appropriately.
